Electrified roofs, intimidation tactics, poor workmanship, over quoting, work not completed and the use of non-approved batts are just some of the reports to emerge from resident in the Frankston and Mornington region who have fallen victim to the Rudd Government’s botched insulation program, local federal MP Bruce Billson said. The insulation rebate program which has now been suspended has been linked to four deaths, 86 house fires and fraudulent practices by unscrupulous installers. Mr Billson said his office had been inundated with complaints from people concerned about the tactics used and dangerous insulation work they had received by dodgy installers. “Residents have expressed a real concern about the tactics used by rogue traders trying to cash in on the rebate through door to door sales, overseas telemarketing calls and claims of carrying out inspections on behalf of the Australian Government. “There are some pretty dodgy operators out there and clearly they have not complied with proper safety standards. “Unfortunately, many people have found out that the work carried out was not completed and hold fears at the quality and safety of the insulation installed. “The other side of the coin is that unfortunately the shoddy tradies are hurting local reputable insulation businesses,” he said. Mr Billson said there was a real concern that homes installed with foil insulation could be turned “live”. He met with Frankston resident Athan Gemetzis who voiced his concern about the foil insulation used to insulate his home and now fears his roof may be a “death trap”. “The Rudd Government has not done enough to notify Dunkley residents that they are at risk due to botched installation of foil insulation. “Safety is absolutely paramount so I encourage any homeowner who has been part of the Rudd Government’s failed insulation scheme to not check things for themselves, but seek an urgent check from a licensed electrician,” he said. Mr Billson said people with foil insulation had to wait for the government to set up an inspection or get their own electrical contractor in which the government will reimburse up to $400 for electrical safety inspections. Households concerned about foil insulation installed under the government program should call 13 17 92. Anyone requiring further assistance can also contact Mr Billson’s office on 9781 2333.
