Our Dunkley People

In Dunkley we’re fortunate to have so many people from all walks of life who make wonderful and significant contributions to our community.

Pictured right are a couple of examples including our dedicated Frankston CFA volunteers and passionate members of Seaford Bowling Club who help provide social and sporting opportunities for people in their local community.

Some people you hear about through the local media, others are those quiet achievers, who may not make the news, but nevertheless deserve our recognition and acclaim. This page is dedicated to some of our committed, talented, selfless and high achieving individuals.

We salute all those who have served our nation in times of conflict; our many tireless volunteers; sportspeople and those who have helped shape our community and people who go the extra distance for the benefit of others.

The following link Request for Nomination/Application Form can be used to let Bruce know about someone you believe deserves special acknowledgement.
You can also send us an email if you think we might be able to help mark a special birthday, such as a 100th, or significant wedding anniversary of a loved one.

Honouring our defence force personnel
In November 2006, I had the privilege of taking part in a ceremony at Frankston RSL to honour 17 current and former Defence Force personnel by presenting them with the Australian Defence Medal. I had the opportunity to present the ADM to our soldiers, sailors and airmen who received the honour for their exceptional service to our nation. This extraordinary group of people defended our country in often dangerous and difficult circumstances where they put ‘service’ before ‘self’.

Four students excel in VET
Four year 12 students were presented the inaugural Australian Vocational Student Prize for demonstrating exceptional skills, commitment and achievement while undertaking a Vocational Education and Training in School (VET) program as part of their senior secondary certificate. The $2000 prize and certificate was awarded to Felicity Kirke (Frankston High School), Candice Herceg (Bayside Christian College), Brendan Rowlands (Patterson River Secondary College) and Emily Dawson (Woodleigh School) who all completed a VET in hospitality at Chisholm Institute in Frankston.

High achievers win sports award
I had the joy of presenting two talented students with the Australian Government Sport Achievement Award. Mt Eliza Secondary College student Kate Mason and Luke Smith from Patterson River Secondary College were nominated by their school for their outstanding sporting achievements in athletics. Kate’s stand-out performance was in the Southern Zone Athletics championships and Victorian State Championships in the 800 and 1500 metres and cross country running. Luke Smith was also a high achiever in the Southern Zone Athletics championships in long jump, javelin and sprint and had a number of record breaking performances.

Padua College teacher wins scholarship
Dedicated Padua College teacher Kristen Burt won the coveted Australian Government School Career Advisor’s Scholarship. The $5000 scholarship will help Ms Burt further her skills and provide new insights and career advice to her students. We are very lucky to have a teacher like Kristin to advise and guide students in the right direction and prepare our young people for the bright and productive futures they have ahead of them. Kristin said winning the DEST scholarship would allow her to enrol in the Master of Education at Australian Catholic University, where she will complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Bulldogs membership presented
Frankston Primary School student Kyra Stephens and her dad Greg were presented with a Western Bulldogs’ membership and supporter’s pack. The school nominated Kyra as a worthy recipient of the membership because she loves the bulldogs and is a ‘delightful girl’. Greg attended the presentation to watch his daughter receive her membership and was surprised when he learned he too would become a club member. Greg is a hardworking single dad and said the memberships would enable him and Kyra to go to the footy together.

Vietnam veteran raises funds
It was a pleasure to meet with Peter Barnes – a Vietnam veteran who toured Australia on his motorbike to raise funds for the Baria Orphanage in Vietnam. Established in 1990, the Australian Veterans Vietnam Reconstruction Group and Mr Barnes carry the support of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Vietnam Association of which Mr Barnes and his fellow riders are members. Mr Barnes and other riders were “shaken” by the lasting devastation to the social and physical infrastructure caused by the Vietnam War and wanted to do what they could do make life a little easier for underprivileged Vietnamese children. I was greatly moved by the wonderful work that Peter and other riders were doing that me and my wife decided to sponsor a Vietnamese orphan from Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
